Shannon Cormack has been appointed the founding principal of Biyala (pronounced bee-ah-lah) Primary School, set to open in Armstrong Creek in 2026.
With 24 years of experience in Victorian government schools, Shannon brings a deep commitment to ensuring every child has access to a high-quality education.
Biyala, a Wadawurrung word meaning “place of biyal” (red gum), will reflect the rich local heritage and the aspirations of a growing community.
“From the moment students walk through our doors, they will feel a sense of belonging, pride, and possibility,” Shannon says.
Shannon is passionate about building a school culture that reflects the hopes of families, the energy of staff, and the unique spirit of Armstrong Creek.
“Over the coming months, I look forward to meeting families, listening to their stories, and working side-by-side to create an inspiring environment where every child can be their best.”

Why did you go for the Principal role at a new school in this area?
Opening a new school is a once-in-a-career opportunity, and I was drawn to the challenge of building something special from the ground up.
This community is growing rapidly, and I want Biyala Primary School to be a place where every child feels safe, known, and inspired to learn.
Do you live locally?
Yes, I do — I live in the Geelong area and absolutely love the community.
It’s a vibrant, supportive place to live and work, and I feel really lucky to be leading a school right in the heart of it.

What are your priorities for Biyala Primary School?
My top priority is student engagement in learning – creating a place where every child is challenged and supported to achieve their best.
We will focus on building a positive school culture underpinned by high expectations, strong relationships, and quality teaching.
Are you planning any unique or specialist curriculum?
Yes – we will have specialist programs in Physical Education, Art, and STEM from day one.
And we are hoping to introduce AUSLAN as our language, which will add a unique and inclusive dimension to our curriculum.
