How to design an amazing room for kids

Once upon a time, the extent of creativity that went into decorating kids’ rooms came down to choosing pink paint, or blue. But nowadays, decorating their bedroom is now just as sophisticated an undertaking as the rest of the house – albeit slightly more playful!
But, where to start? Here are our top tips for helping you design a room that will seamlessly transition from a baby nursery and playroom for busy infants, to something that can serve kids from their early school days through to their teens.
- Keep colours light. Opt for white hard furnishings (such as cots, and change tables, desks, and joinery) and add a wow factor through vibrant fabrics, textures and soft furnishings, to allow a backdrop that matures in line with your kids’ tastes.
- If you do want to inject a little colour and fun into their room, paint the ceiling, or all four walls different colours.
- Add wall stickers like a large wall map or perhaps gold dots on the ceiling or walls to add interest.
- Bunk beds are a great use of space, and you can incorporate storage, desks and other interactive elements within the structure.
- Consider a playroom for your kids when planning the layout. Use colourful rugs to define the space and add a beanbag or ottoman for comfy seating.
- Hang fairy lights around a mirror or artwork to add ambience and interest at night.
- Felt boards are a great way for older children to display photos or drawings important to them.
- Install novelty wall hooks at a height available to the kids for dress-ups, crowns and hats so that they can add their personality to the room. Floor-length mirrors are also great for dress-ups.
- Create your own wall art using recycled items, like framing illustrated pages from a vintage children’s book for youngsters or retro record covers for teenagers.
Whatever you do, make sure there’s lots of storage so you and they can keep their room organised!
